கௌதம புத்தர் காலத்தில் ஒரு சில பிக்குனிகள் மட்டுமே இருந்தனர். அவர்களில் புகழ் பெற்ற பிக்குணிகளில் பௌத்த சாத்திரங்களின்படி, கௌதம புத்தரின் மனைவி [[யசோதரை]], அத்தை மற்றும் புத்தரின் வளர்ப்புத் தாயான [[மகாபிரஜாபதி கௌதமி]] ஆகியோர் முதன் முதலில் பௌத்த சமயத்தில் சேர்ந்து பிக்குணீகளாக வாழ்ந்தனர்.

===தமிழ்நாடு===
கி.பி. இரண்டாம் நூற்றாண்டில் வாழ்ந்த [[கோவலன்]]-[[மாதவி]] இணையரின் மகள் [[மணிமேகலை (காப்பியம்)|மணிமேகலை]] தமிழ்நாட்டின் முதல் பௌத்த பிக்குணியாக அறியப்பட்டவள்.

==பிக்கு நெறிகள்==
[[மகாயாண பௌத்தம்|மகாயாண பௌத்தப்]] பிரிவில் மட்டுமே பெண்கள் பிக்குணிகளாக சேர்க்கப்படுகிறார்கள். பிக்குணிகளுக்கென தனி [[புத்த விகாரம்|மடாலயங்கள்]] உள்ளன. பிக்குணிகள் சமைத்து உண்ணாது பிச்சை எடுத்து உண்ண வேண்டும் என்பது வினய பீடகத்தின் விதிகளில் ஒன்றாகும்.

[[மகாயாண பௌத்தம்|மகாயாண பௌத்த]]ப் பிரிவை பின்பற்றும் கொரியா, வியட்நாம், சீனா மற்றும் தைவான் போன்ற நாடுகளில் மட்டுமே சிறிய அளவில் பெண்களை பௌத்த மடாலயத்தில் பிக்குணி என்ற பெயரில் சீடர்களாக சேர்த்துக் கொள்ளப்படுகிறார்கள். [[திபெத்திய பௌத்தம்|திபெத்திய பௌத்தப்]] பிரிவில் பெண்களை பிக்குணிகளாக மடங்களில் சேர்த்துக் கொள்கிறார்கள்.

பௌத்த சமயத்தில் ஆண் பிக்குகள் போன்று பெண் பிக்குணிகள் நிர்வாணத்தை அடையமுடியும்.

தற்காலத்தில் பெண்களை பிக்குணிகளாக பௌத்த சமயப் பிரிவுகள் ஏற்பது குறைந்து கொண்டே வருகிறது.
